Basic Science as Part of a Well Rounded Chiropractic Curriculum 05/26/2010

The education of today’s chiropractic doctors is highly regulated and requires four years of intensive study. Part and parcel of the chiropractic curriculum are basic sciences. Some students wonder whether or not the amount of time spent in these endeavors could not be spent better by learning the core applications that will later on help them in their practice with patients. While at face value this might be a reasonable request, it soon becomes obvious that basic sciences is actually a most crucial aspect in the training of the next generation of chiropractors.

Basic sciences within the chiropractic curriculum usually refer to the study of biochemistry, pathology, physiology, anatomy, and even microbiology. These subject areas appear to only be tangentially related to chiropractics as a field, but under closer scrutiny they soon make it quite apparent that in fact a well rounded chiropractic cannot be accomplished without them. After all, how better to teach a student the many different ways in which abnormalities in a patient’s body might present. Sure, every student will be able to recognize an abnormally curved spine, yet the fine points of abnormality, especially beginning abnormalities in their early stages, usually require significant training that can only be had by mastering the basic sciences.

Add to this the fact that some abnormalities can be detected as early as they appear on the cellular level, and the notion that biochemistry as well as microbiology are requires suddenly does not appear as such a waste of time anymore. Of course, anatomy is a mainstay in the chiropractic field, since it will help the student to understand the proximity of organs to the nerves of the spine, and will also help the aspiring chiropractor to have a healthy respect for the many problems that could arise from improper care, thus stressing the need for interdisciplinary knowledge when treating the patient as a whole rather than just a problem area.

For the chiropractic doctor who will be practicing in the United States, the basic sciences are an integral part in the process of becoming a primary care physician and will help the health care professional to read, understand, and use the information provided by other medical professionals. In addition to the foregoing, as part of a medical team treating a patient, she or he is now able to adequately communicate with the other medical professionals as well, thus increasing the patient’s chances of receiving quality medical care and attaining a healing that will last in the long term rather than receiving a short term fix.

To be sure, basic sciences are very much the basis on which the chiropractic curriculum builds itself, and develops the aspiring chiropractors’ understanding and appreciation of the physical aspects she or he will be dealing with in the clinical setting. Any chiropractic student who thinks they can make do without this information will be sadly mistaken and find that a lack of knowledge in basic sciences will usually lead to a lot of catching up in the higher courses.

Poway Chiropractor Dr. Rode Talks About How Chiropractic Care Offers Relief for Those Suffering From Degenerative Disc Disease 05/25/2010

There are times in the life of a chiropractor when the diagnosis of subluxation is not necessary to state the fact that a patient suffers from degenerative disc disease. Oftentimes described by sufferers as excruciating shooting pains that originate in the lower back, this condition affects the discs that are cushioning the vertebrae or segmental portions of the spine. Many tend to think of these discs as simply being round in shape but this is a somewhat misleading idea. Consider the fact that these discs not only lie between the vertebrae, but that they also form ligaments which in fact hold the vertebrae in place rather than allowing too much of a range of motion.

In the young and unharmed body, the discs are squishy and readily give way a time of movement.  Yet with the years that age the body, the discs do not remain flexible and easily move, but instead they degenerate and suddenly they become a large liability to the healthy functioning of the spine. Take for example the dreaded ailment known as spinal stenosis which presents as a compression of the spinal cord and will cause the sufferer to not only experience the lower back pain aforementioned, but might even cause discomfort in the legs, which is usually the warning sign that causes a sufferer to look for some treatment. Oftentimes, it is the chiropractor who gets the call for an appointment, and with the help of medical imaging, this ailment can be quickly diagnosed.

Another form of degenerative disc disease occurs when the discs slip and slightly change their positions. This in turn will lead to a rubbing of vertebrae against one another or even the pinching of nerves between them. This is quite possible one of the most often observed problems in the chiropractor’s office.  Sufferers will sometimes report that they experience an odd tingling or a dull pain while walking. The pain may not be enough to keep the sufferer from doing daily exercising or engaging in activities, but it does present a painful reminder that all is not well. Chiropractics are usually sought out to either supplement a regimen of traditional medical intervention, or in extreme cases it might be an effort to avoid painful back surgery.

While chiropractics do not offer a magic bullet for those suffering from degenerative disc disease, it does provide a number of services that spell hope even for the most extreme sufferers. Take for example the fact that since chiropractics are a form of alternative medicine, and many in this field are familiar in an interdisciplinary way with nutrition and exercise. In addition to manipulating your spine, a skilled chiropractor will be able to also suggest a dietary regimen that will aid your discs to such an extent that some regeneration may occur. In addition to the foregoing, because of the close ties between the athletic community and the field of chiropractics, there is a good chance that your chiropractor will be provide you with a number of exercises that you need to follow to keep yourself limber, and your spine healthy.

Poway Chiropractor Dr. Rode Explains What is Chiropractic and How Does it Help 05/11/2010

Those that practice Chiropractic do so because it gives relief to many from pain. It is a form of health care that has a focus towards the body’s structure (mostly the spine area) and the function of the structure. Those who practice the art of chiropractic are called “doctors of chiropractic, chiropractors, or chiropractic physicians”. They basically use hands on therapy referred to as “manipulation” or “adjustments”.

Those who seek chiropractors often suffer from musculoskeletal ailments that involve bones, connective tissue (cartilages), joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons. There is a risk of injury from having your neck adjusted and a lower risk from having your back adjusted. You should investigate these risks before agreeing to participate in this therapy. It is also important to let your entire healthcare team know about all treatments you are thinking about engaging in.

Chiropractics believe that the structure of the body and the corresponding function are connected. They also believe that the body has an amazing ability to heal itself. The primary goal of chiropractic therapy is to help the body to heal by assisting the relationship between structure and function.

The most common complaint of those using chiropractic services is chronic low back pain. Other reasons for seeing a chiropractic doctor are: headaches, neck pain, repetitive action pain, and sports injuries. Patients being treated may also receive the following treatments: acupuncture, counseling is available for diet issues including weight loss, electrical stimulation, heat or ice, homeopathy, and also supplements. This is a type of healthcare where the patients overall health and well-being is concentrated on and the emphasis is placed on providing natural, drug-free, non-surgical treatments that focus on the natural ability of the human body to heal itself. Therapy can include use of water, light, massage, ultrasound as well as different types of support materials like braces and tapes. The patient may be counseled on total life wellness regarding diet, lifestyle, and how to manage stress.

Patients should know that chiropractic is state regulated. Chiropractics are licensed and most states do require them to continue to maintain their licenses by attending continuing education classes. Each state determines what services a chiropractor operating in their state can provide. Not all states license chiropractics to perform all services, so patients should check with any chiropractic organizations in their state to find out what applies to their state. There are no states in the U.S.A. in which chiropractors can be licensed to perform major surgery or to prescribe drugs to their clients.

More than 50% of all HMO’s and 75% of all private health care plans cover chiropractic services. Patients need to check with their individual health plans to see if they are covered before they receive treatments. All states in the U.S.A. have worker’s compensation benefits for chiropractic services and chiropractic services can be billed to Medicare and most states allow chiropractic services to be billed to Medicaid. Depending on your plan of coverage your treatments may be required to be approved in advance may be limited as to the number of visits covered or there may be rules about using in network chiropractic practitioners. It is always wise to call your health care plan administrator or customer service number and ask questions before receiving treatment.

If getting out of bed is a painful routine for you, then you know that your body is protesting about something that has happened. Perhaps your legs ache, your back hurts, your neck feels stiff on one side, and within minutes of waking you feel a dull headache coming on. Do you know that these problems and the further reaching health issues that may be caused by them can be avoided? Here are some tips and tricks your chiropractor would like you to know:

§           First and foremost, visit your local chiropractor to have your spinal alignment checked and adjusted as appropriate. Starting out with a clean slate will help many of the little aches and pains – and even some of the big ones – to go away permanently.

§           Do not feel that you have to jump out of bed in the morning and start running from the first moment your open your eyes. Instead, set the alarm for 15 minutes earlier and do some deep breathing exercises, and some light stretching when you get out of bed. Turn to your left and right with the upper body, then repeat the same exercise with your neck.

§           Remember what mom always told you: stand up straight! While slouching over your book will not give you a hump (sorry, mom) it will contribute to the poor aligning of your spine and may even aggravate certain conditions!

§           Everyone knows that lifting needs to be done carefully from the knees with a straight back – but tell this to your kids!  As a matter of fact, do tell it to your kids!  Teaching them to lift properly by example – such as when you are lifting them – will go a long ways to preserving their and your healthy back and spine.

§           Ladies, there are some aspects of appearing ladylike and chic that have chiropractors cringing every time they see it: high heels which affect the spine due to the lack of a proper distribution of weight, legs crossed in the same position, and of course shoulder purses that carry everything including the kitchen sink. All of these little things that millions of women do each day contribute to an unhealthy way of life and a potentially hurt spine.

§           Office workers know the guilty pleasure of working on the computer while holding the phone cradled in the crook of the neck, or those whose home offices are set up in such a manner that the computer keyboard is positioned improperly for the sake of the aesthetic appearance of the home décor.

If you are honest, you know that you are probably engaging in one or more of these behaviors that chiropractors will warn you against on a daily basis. While it is easy to rationalize these missteps that are negatively affecting your spine, the fact remains that the pain in the morning and the shooting pain that suddenly may affect you in the afternoon is very real. Thus, you will be wise to follow your chiropractor’s advice, and furthermore schedule regular visits to your chiropractor to ensure that your spine is in proper alignment and that you will not suffer from tension headaches, neck pains, and assorted other ailments which can all be avoided.

Poway Chiropractor Dr Rode Explains Why Some Patients Need Heel Lifts 04/19/2010

One of the reasons why patients may suffer from low back pain is because the have what is called an anatomical short leg. There are two types of short legs anatomical and functional. A functional short leg is when one of the muscle is contracted and causes the feet to be different on a leg length check. An anatomical short leg is something that shows up when an X-ray film is taken. Some times if the difference is large enough a heel lift for the shoe may be warranted. When you put in heal lifts and there is a large difference say 15 mm it is important to start off slowly. Start with a 3 mm lift then go to a 6 mm lift then 9 mm and then a 12 mm lift. If start of with the 12 mm lift you can actually be causing more problems in the low back because the body in no use to such a sudden change. That is why it is always important to gradually increase the lift height.  For more information about your chiropractic needs call Dr Rode at Rode Chiropractic in Poway CA 858-391-1372

Poway Chiropractor Dr Rode Tells Why He Recommends Patients Get Med Pay on their Auto Insurance 12/07/2009

Today is a rainy day and it will rain for the next couple of days. i will probably get a patient from a car accident due to the rain. I always recommend that people get med pay for their car insurance because if the car accident is severe (which they can be) then the patients health insurance may not cover all of the visits necessary to get them better. This is especially important if you don’t have health insurance or it doesn’t cover chiropractic care. I know one person who was in a care accident and she broke her leg. The health insurance paid for the hospital bills but did not pay for the cost of the ambulance which ended up costing 1,000.00. If she had med pay on her car insurance it would have paid for the ambulance cost. So check with you car insurance company and see if you have med pay on your policy. If you don’t then look into getting it. Because you never know when you will need it and it really doesn’t add much to your premium.

Why It is Important to See A Chiropractor After a Car Accident 11/14/2009

If you are in a car accident it is important to see a chiropractor after the accident. What happens is that the impact my cause a misalignment in the spine if the impact is sever enough. Even though you may not feel any pain right away the pain can slowly develop months after the initial impact. Another reason why it is important is be checked is because you may have sustained a whiplash injury. The occurs when the car hits you from behind and your head quickly goes forward and then backwards. Sometimes this can cause a reversal of the curve in your neck and this can only be determined by taking an x-ray of your neck. Traction may be required to restore the curve of your neck due to the tearing or stretching of ligaments and tissues. If it is not restored then degeneration will begin with bone spurring and decrease in disk height as a result. I also recommend that patients carry med pay on their car insurance incase their health insurance doesn’t have chiropractic care and even if it does it may take more than the number of visits that their health insurance covers.

An advisory committee for the Federal Drug Administration recommended a ban on Percocet and Vicodin because of their effects on the liver.
The drugs contain acetaminophen which is found in Tylenol and Excedrin.
Each year 400 people die and 42,000 are hospitalized due to overdoses.
People are using these drugs to limit or decrease the pain they are experiencing.
Low back pain, neck pain, headaches are common reasons for taking it.
These are also the aches and pains that chiropractors can effectively treat.

www.rodechiropractic

Now doesn’t it make sense to see a chiropractor to see if he can help rather than risk liver damage by taking acetaminophen?

A lot of people tell me about their pains and describe them as muscle pain and feel that massage or stretching can just solve the problem. Yet when they do this this problem keeps coming back. I want to shed some light on what is going on. If you haven’t been to the gym in a long time and exercise a lot you are going to have sore muscles the next couple days and then it should go away. I you have sore or tight and achy muscles that don’t seem the get better than some else is probably going on. People commonly associate nerve involvement with sharp shooting pains or numbness and tingling. Nerve involvement can also manifest as muscle aches and tightness that just doesn’t get better. But since people feel it in their muscles they naturally conclude it is a muscle problem. When a nerve is pinched or there is pressure on it can cause many symptoms. Naturally is you have any sort of problem of this nature and want to get something done about it I would invite you to come in for an evaluation you can find out more information at www.poway-chiropractic.com or www.rodechiropractic.com

Pain’s Message 12/28/2008

Most people think of pain as an annoyance. Pain actually serves a very useful purpose. It is telling you that something is wrong and needs fixing or correction. However what most people do today is to take a pain pill that will make the pain go away. This is actually a bad idea because once the pain is gone then you are much more likely to do something which will aggravate your condition. So what you need to do is figure out why you are having you pain. Was it the first time in a while that you went to the gym and you now have sore muscles. Well that should go away in a day or two. Is it something that has been going on for months or even years? Then that definitely warrants further investigation. What happens is you may have some degeneration going on in your spine that is affecting the nerves going to your muscles. This should not be ignored. Degeneration in the spine is a progressive condition that if not stopped can lead to permanent decrease in space for the nerves to come out of the spine and greatly increases the chance of having problems now and in the future. If you are having problems, aches pains and they have been going on a long time please visit my website atwww.Poway-Chiropractic.com or www.RodeChiropractic.com

Chiropractic Can Help Whiplash Pain, Says Dr. Kip Rode of Rode Chiropractic 12/27/2008

A high percentage of auto accidents result in whiplash. To avoid short and long term pain, chiropractic care should be administered as soon as possible.

Poway CA, February 08, 2008 — According to the United States Department of Transportation, over the last decade there was an average of more than 5 million automobile accidents every year, resulting in more than 2 million injuries annually.

Perhaps the most common auto injury is whiplash, which is caused by a sudden movement of the head in any direction. The result is that muscles and ligaments supporting the spine can become strained or torn. Some symptoms include neck pain or stiffness, pain between shoulder blades, blurred vision, fatigue, headache, and dizziness to name a few.

Often times auto accident victims are not aware of the damage caused by whiplash. Symptoms sometimes do not appear immediately. They can take days to appear or may not even surface for years, according to Dr. Kip Rode, D.C., an expert chiropractor and owner of Rode Chiropractic. Because of this, Dr. Rode urges all accident victims to seek medical care whether they feel immediate pain or not. In some cases early detection of whiplash can significantly decrease long-term consequences. According to Dr. Rode, even after whiplash victims settle insurance claims, almost half suffer with symptoms even two years later.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 800,000 people suffer from whiplash every year. Costs related to whiplash total more than $5 billion annually. Today most cases of automobile whiplash are covered by insurance companies.

Often times, medical professionals like chiropractors will offer free consultations to auto injury victims to see if whiplash or any other injuries need proper care. Dr. Rode offers a free consultation at his practice, Rode Chiropractic. “That way it makes it easier for victims to see if they need help. Especially with whiplash cases, where many times victims don’t even know they are injured. I can’t stress the importance of medical care after an accident. It can really reduce long term pain, discomfort, and treatment,” said Dr. Rode

Can I Adjust My Own Back 12/24/2008

A lot of times patients and people I know will explain how they “pop” their own back or neck by stretching their bodies in an extreme way. They want to know if this is similar to what I do. I have to tell them that it is not. The sound they hear is just like the sound when you crack you knuckles but it is different than what I do as a chiropractor.
When I adjust them I am moving the bone that has been stuck or fixated for a long period of time and doesn’t move freely. Since a poping sound occurs frequently when I make an adjustment they naturally equate the two but there really is a difference. When a patient moves their neck or back and a sound occurs it is from a joint that is already moving well on it own and not the one causing the problems. This is really an important point that many people don’t understand. So there really is a big difference between what I do and what a person thinks they do on their own.
Also cracking your knuckles does not cause your joints to grow that was just story your parents told you to get you to stop doing it because the sound annoyed them.  I am located on 13248 Poway Road Ste B 858 391-1372

Poway Chiropractor Dr Rode Talks About Stretching to Prevent Back Pain 12/24/2008

Stretching is very important for your body. I want you to think just a moment about what a dog or cat does when they wake up from sleep. They stretch their whole body and then go about their business. But people commonly role out of bed after hitting the alarm button, take a show and get dressed for work. What you really want to do after just waking up is to slowly stretch your back and your neck. By taking your time and stretching each morning you can help prevent your spine from going out of alignment during the day.

Got Lower Back Pain During Pregnancy Dr Kip Rode Uses Chiropractic to Treat Pain 12/22/2008

Sept 22, 2008
Press Release Summary = Dr Kip Rode of Rode Chiropractic has been
helping pregnant women relieve their lower back pain during the whole pregnancy process.

It is estimated that two-thirds of American women will experience lower back pain by
the 36th week of pregnancy. Dr Kip Rode, a local Poway, CA chiropractor, has been helping pregnant women to relieve their lower back pain and is getting
excellent results without the use of drugs.

According to Dr. Rode, “Many women are told by their physician that they simply need to wait until after birth to be alleviated from their pain. This is not true. Chiropractic care can not only treat lower back pain, but often leads to a quicker and less painfull labor process. Women do not have to simply accept lower back pain during pregnancy, now they can do something to prevent it.”

Lower back pain is such a prevalent symptom during pregnancy for the following reasons: women experience significant weight gain that adds stress to the lower back, their center of gravity changes during pregnancy which causes muscular imbalances and muscle fatiguing, and they experience hormonal surges which cause joint laxity and decreased joint support.

Dr. Rode says that, “Chiropractic care should be used throughout the whole pregnancy process. Before a woman becomes pregnant, a proper examination can reveal imbalances in the spine or pelvis that can lead to lower back pain during pregnancy and neuromusculoskeletal problems after birth. During pregnancy, I can make recommendations for appropriate stretching and activities of daily living that can strengthen lower back muscles. After pregnancy, many women still experience lower back pain due to stretching of the ligaments. Treatment for this should be done
before the ligaments return to their pre-pregnancy state. Chiropractic care should really be administered throughout the whole pregnancy process.”

Dr. Rode, is located at 13248 Poway Rd STE B, Poway, CA 92064 . He can be reached by telephone at 858-391-1372 or through his website at Poway-Chiropractor.com

Dr. Kip Rode Helps Reduce Back Pain During Pregnancy at Rode Chiropractic 12/12/2008

Dr. Kip Rode offers insight on how to reduce and prevent back pain during pregnancy with chiropractic care. Women do not have to suffer through uncomfortable back pain if preventative measures are taken.

Poway, July 20, 2007 — Pregnancy greatly increases a woman’s vulnerability to back problems during and after birth. Did you know that at least half of pregnant women experience back pain during pregnancy? Some studies suggest that these numbers are even higher.

Many women simply accept back pain as an unavoidable trade off in the creation of new life. However, Dr. Kip Rode, D.C., of Rode Chiropractic says that pregnant women do not have to take back pain “lying down.” Dr. Rode is an experienced chiropractor in Poway, CA who aims at increasing women’s awareness of the relationship between back pain and pregnancy. He said, “Women who are more educated are more likely to seek care and reduce back pain.”

Studies have proven that chiropractic care greatly reduces the amount of pain and discomfort throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. A study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in 1991 revealed that 84% of patients who received spinal manipulative therapy (chiropractic care) reported a decrease in back pain while pregnant. Another study reported in the book “Chiropractic Pediatrician” showed that regular chiropractic adjustments reduced average labor times by an average of 33%.

Dr. Rode said, “Women who have regular chiropractic treatment and are properly instructed about ways to reduce pain have a much easier, smoother child bearing experience. Also, women who have significant back pain during pregnancy are more likely to experience a longer period of pain in subsequent pregnancies. That’s why I really stress a preemptive approach, meaning get educated before your body begins to make its maternal changes.”

Dr. Rode strongly suggests contact with a local chiropractor who can give valuable guidance and care. Some other things that can be done to reduce strain on the back are sleeping on your side, maintaining good posture, eating and exercising properly, using a pregnancy pillow or support belt, and many more.

To learn more about this topic schedule a consultation with your local chiropractor. Dr. Kip Rode offers a discounted consultation for pregnant women or women who may become pregnant. Rode Chiropractic is located at 13248 Poway Road Suite B, Poway, CA. Also, visit Dr. Rode’s website at www.rodechiropractic.com for more information.
